Juicing 101

Alicia Zambrano

What exactly is juicing, anyway? Juicing is a process whereby the natural liquids, along with all the glorious vitamins and minerals are extracted from raw fruits and vegetables. This will leave behind any solid matter, leaving you with liquid only. Oh, not just any liquid. This nectar of the goods has vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds and phytonutrients all wrapped up in one easy to enjoy, ultra hydrating drink. Your body can very easily and quickly absorb and digest the nutrients in the juice because the solid matter has been left behind. This aids in the body’s natural detoxification process because of the extremely high amount of nutrients in a small volume of liquid. 95% of the vitamins, minerals and enzymes your body needs are found in the juice of raw fruits and vegetables. You would have to consume two pounds of carrots, 10-12 apples, or 8 pounds of spinach to get the same amount of nutrients in one 16-ounce glass of juice!  Recent research indicates that juicing can facilitate weight loss, increase energy levels, strengthen immunity and bones, as well as contribute to a over-all glowing complexion. It may also reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and stroke, which are the three leading causes of death in our country today. A growing body of research also suggests that most vitamin supplements do not help to prevent chronic disease. A synthetic vitamin or mineral is a laboratory simulation of the real thing. Natural, plant-based vitamins and minerals are more easily and completely absorbed into the body.
